34 die, 10 missing as floods wreck havoc in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh: At least 34 people have died due to the floods caused by incessant rains in Andhra Pradesh while 10 are reported missing.

The state’s Agriculture Minister Kurasala Kannababu informed the Assembly on Monday that the death toll in the affected four districts of Andhra Pradesh has risen to 34 and 10 persons are still missing.

Making a statement in the house, Kannababu said that so far 34 people had died in heavy rains and floods in Kadapa, Nellore, Anantapur, and Chittoor districts and 10 persons were still missing and efforts were being made to trace them.

He said that as per the preliminary enumeration, crops were damaged in more than 8 lakh acres in the state due to heavy rains and floods.

More than 5.33 lakh farmers suffered crop loss due to the floods.

The Minister said that the government had announced Rs 5 lakh ex gratia to the families of each of the deceased. The payment of ex-gratia has already begun, he added.

He informed that out of the 34 people who died in the rain and flood fury, three were rescue personnel.

Kannababu said that Rs 10 crore was given to the Collectors of Kadapa, Nellore, Chittoor, and Rs 5 crore was given to the Anantapur district Collector to carry out rescue and relief operations.

The Minister said that Rs 30,000 would be paid to each milch cattle that perished in the floods Rs 3000 each to sheep and goat as compensation.

The government had taken steps to provide fodder for the cattle. An amount of Rs 95,000 would be paid to the completely damaged houses, Rs 5,250 to partially damaged houses, Rs 25 lakh would be paid to the families of government employees who died in the floods and a job would also be given to one person in the family.

He said that the government would provide seeds to the farmers in the flood-ravaged districts on 80 per cent subsidy.

The Chief Minister directed the officials concerned to take steps to restore power supply in the affected areas and reconstruct roads on war-footing. The enumeration of crop loss would be completed as the earliest, he said.

The main rail and road routes in Andhra Pradesh, connecting the south and east, remained cut off as the Penna river in spate caused heavy destruction on Sunday.

Toll in rain-related incidents in different districts of the state touched 31 as more bodies were retrieved from the flooded streams.
