Srinagar: All Parties Hurriyat Conference on Thursday condemned the arrest of a woman and her daughter by the authorities for sloganeering near the military operation site in Srinagar.

On 13 December, police said that two militants were killed in a military operation conducted by a joint team of armed forces in Rangreth area of Srinagar.

In a statement, Hurriyat said, “It is very unfortunate that mere raising of slogans is seen as a threat by those in authority.”

“APHC asked the authorities to release Afrooza begum and her daughter Ayesha who have committed no crime except an emotional outburst,” the statement said.

Earlier, the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said that arresting of the women in Kashmir marks a new low for the administration.

While retweeting a news story about the arrest of the duo, Mehbooba said, “Arresting women in Kashmir marks a new low for the administration that persecutes civilians only to please their masters in Delhi.”

She added, “The situation is getting worse & instead of reaching out to the people, GOI is pushing them to the wall.”

Peoples Conference Chief Sajad Lone also condemned the arrest and said the move is ‘in violation of democratic norms’.

While condemning the police action, Lone in a statement said, “Arresting two women for merely protesting is highly reprehensible and in violation of democratic norms.”

“It is extremely suffocating to live in a place where the government’s sword is perpetually hanging over our heads. This administration has gone berserk and is arresting people by every minute. These actions are in brazen violation of democratic and civilized norms,” he added.

Earlier, a report quoting official sources said that the mother, daughter identified as Afrooza wife of Mushtaq Ahmad Sofi, and her daughter Aisha daughter of Mushtaq Ahmad Sofi, both residents of Rose enclave Wanbal Rawalpora in Srinagar outskirts were arrested on the charges of allegedly raising ‘anti-India slogans’ in the aftermath of the Rangreth shootout.

They said the duo were arrested by Police Station Saddar and were later shifted to Women’s Police Station Rambagh after completing the legal formalities.

A police official had confirmed that a case under FIR number 209/ 2021 under sections 147, 148, 149, and 326 was registered against them for ‘creating a law and order situation’ in aftermath of the operation.
