Mumbai: Three Indian Navy personnel were killed and eleven others injured in an explosion onboard the destroyer INS Ranvir at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Tuesday.

The Indian Navy spokesman in a statement identified the deceased as Krishan Kumar MCPO I, Surinder Kumar MCPO II and A. K. Singh MCPO II.

“Adm R Hari Kumar, CNS and all personnel of Indian Navy extent heartfelt condolences to the families of Krishan Kumar MCPO I, Surinder Kumar MCPO II and A. K. Singh MCPO II, who succumbed to injuries caused by the unfortunate incident on board INS Ranvir on 18 Jan ’22. We fully standby with the families in this difficult time,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, reports quoting officials said that a board of inquiry has been set up to look into the incident.

Pertinently, INS Ranvir, a Soviet-Era destroyer, is one of the oldest warships in the Navy. It was commissioned in April 1986 and is the first of the Ranvir Class and fourth destroyer of the Rajput Class.

Earlier in 2019, a Navy worker died in a fire incident on board at the then under-construction Vishakhapatnam at Mazagon dockyard.
