One killed, 23 others injured in grenade attack in Srinagar: Police

Srinagar: An elderly man was killed while 23 others including many women sustained injuries in a grenade explosion at Hari Singh High Street (HSHS) Srinagar on Sunday, police said.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Central Kashmir range, Sujit Kumar while talking to reporters at the site of the incident said that in the afternoon, a grenade was tossed at the busy place near Amira Kadal-HSHS Srinagar.

“An elderly man has died while 23 others including a policeman sustained injuries,” he said.

Replying to a query, the DIG said that it wasn’t a security lapse as a policeman has also got injured.

“We have got the CCTV footage and some vital clues have coke forward,” he said. The DIG said that no outfit has claimed responsibility so far and police was working on leads to track the attackers.

He said police will take steps to prevent attacks at busy places. “We will not allow it to become a trend,” he said, adding that security was a challenge in entire Kashmir including Srinagar.

Meanwhile, the slain man has been identified as Abdul Salaam Makhdoomi, 70, of Nowhatta Srinagar while hospital sources said that among the injured many were women.
