Kashmiri psychiatrist bags prestigious award in UK

Srinagar: A young Kashmiri Psychiatrist, currently based in England, is the first Kashmiri doctor to receive the prestigious, ‘Innovator of the year 2022 Award’, by the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych), London.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists is the professional medical body responsible for supporting psychiatrists throughout their careers from training through to retirement, and in setting and raising standards of psychiatry in the United Kingdom.

The South Eastern Division of Royal College of Psychiatrists organized its first Regional Trainee and Trainer Awards 2022 and the nominations were filed in Jan this year.

Out of various nominees, the award was granted to the Kashmiri Psychiatrist, Dr Shah Tarfarosh, who is currently working as a Specialist Registrar Psychiatrist and Honorary Teaching Fellow at the University of Oxford, for his pioneering role in various fields apart from his designated job.

Besides, he was also nominated for four awards and selected as a finalist for three awards including ‘Psychiatric Educator of the year’, ‘Trainee Innovator of the year’, ‘Trainee Peer of the year’ and ‘Higher Trainee of the year’.

The award is given in psychiatry to doctors who have contributed innovatively, in addition to their usual clinical role, in fields like quality improvement, research, teaching, leadership, management, public engagement and education.

Besides working as a psychiatrist, Dr Shah has been working as a teaching fellow at the University of Oxford where he has been educating young psychiatrist trainees.

Hailing from Buchpora area of Srinagar, Dr Shah qualified MBBS from Jammu and Kashmir in 2016. He later passed the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board test-PLAB exams in 2017 and received the GMC-UK registration and license to work in the UK.

“I started a Clinical Fellow job in the CQC rated outstanding hospital of England in 2018 – Salford Royal in Manchester where I built my application towards exams and interviews for a training post in Psychiatry at Oxford, which I thankfully, qualified,” Dr Shah told Free Press Kashmir.

In 2021 Dr Shah completed the MRCPsych from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, London by passing their exams while training and working in Psychiatry at Oxford and has recently got selected to pursue a higher specialization in Adult Psychiatry again at Oxford.

Moreover, in 2021 he was rewarded with a post-grad award for completing a postgraduate course in clinical research, education, and research (CREL) at the University of Cambridge.

“I am also doing my part-time MBA from Germany to boost my leadership and management skills,” he added.
