Domestic violence: Injured woman succumbs, SIT formed to probe ‘sensitive case’

Baramulla: A woman, who was critically injured after she was allegedly beaten up by her in-laws in Keeri village of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday evening at Srinagar hospital.

“The 28-year-old victim, mother of two children was undergoing treatment at SKIMS, Soura hospital since last Tuesday where she succumbed to her injuries today,” officials said.

Earlier, the family members of the victim had said that she was beaten by her husband and in-laws on Eid day and suffered critical injuries and was battling for her life in ICU at SKIMS Soura hospital.

“Soon after the incident, she was taken to Sub District Hospital (SDH) Kreeri from where she was shifted to SKIMS Soura hospital for specialized treatment,” they said.

Narrating the incident, the brother of the victim had said that her sister was being harassed continuously by her husband and in-laws ever since their marriage. “They try to kill her citing reasons of dowry,” he said and demanded immediate arrest of the accused and strong punishment to them.

The incident had also sparked massive protest, demanding strict action against the accused.

Meanwhile, a police official said that a case has been registered under relevant sections of laws.

The official said that the victim’s husband has been arrested and further investigation into the matter is going on.

Moreover, SSP Baramullla, Rayees Bhat tweeted: “Who said they (accused) are roaming free? FIR has been lodged exactly as per wishes of family, family already assured of strict possible action on merits and accused already arrested. Don’t spread rumours and instigate people.”

Police has also constituted a Special Investigation Team headed by Additional Superintendent Baramulla to probe the incident.

“In view of the sensitivity of case, FIR 42/2022 under section 307, 323, 498A IPC of police station Kreeri, a Special Investigation Team is constituted for speedy/quality investigation of the case,” reads an order by SSP Baramulla Rayees Mohammad Bhat.

Besides Additional Superintendent Baramulla as its head, the members of the SIT include SDPO Kreeri, SHO of police station Kreeri and ASIs Ali Mohammad and Mohammad Sadiq.

“The SIT is directed to carry out the investigation of the case on professional lines and ensure that no lucuna is left in the investigation,” reads the order.

It added, “the team shall conclude the investigation of the case on its merits at an earliest.” Besides, the SSP Baramulla has ordered SIT to share details with his office on weekly basis.
