Israel launched missile attacks on military sites in the Syrian capital of Damascus, international media reported quoting officials.

The missile attacks took place on Friday midnight, Xinhua news agency reported. The report said the Syrian air defences were triggered by the attacks, shooting down a number of the Israeli missiles. Explosions were heard at Damascus.

The attacks also targeted the southern countryside of Damascus, the report said, without providing further details. Syrian air defences intercepted the raid and managed to down most of the missiles, the Defence Ministry of Syria said in a statement early on Saturday as quoted in the report.

There was no immediate confirmation whether the attack affected flight operations at the Damascus airport.

Al Jazeera quoting the Syrian defence ministry said on its website that the attack was launched at about 00:45 am local time (21:45 GMT) with a missile fired from the air from the northeastern direction of Lake Tiberias, targeting the airport and other targets south of the city.

“The aggression led to the death of five soldiers and some material damage,” Syria’s official news agency Sana quoted a military source as saying.

Israel has intensified strikes on Syria’s airports on the grounds that it wants to disrupt Tehran’s increasing use of aerial supply routes to deliver arms to allies in Syria and Lebanon, including Hezbollah, regional diplomatic and intelligence sources told Reuters.

An Israeli missile strike in the countryside around the capital Damascus and south of coastal Tartous province killed three soldiers last month. Pertinently, in June, Israeli air raids put Damascus airport out of service for nearly two weeks.
