New Delhi: India is preparing to purchase the VSHORAD (IR Homing) missile system, which is being created and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), in the midst of the protracted military standoff with China near the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.

Tuesday, the VSHORAD (IR Homing) missile system received Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) from the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), which is chaired by Defence Minister of India Rajnath Singh.

Additionally, the DAC approved the purchase of HELINA anti-tank guided missiles, launchers, and related support equipment for the Army’s indigenous Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH), as well as the Brahmos Launcher and Fire Control System (FCS) for the Navy’s Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMVs) and Shivalik Class Ships.

“In view of the recent developments along the northern borders there is a need to focus on effective Air Defence (AD) weapon systems which are man portable and can be deployed quickly in rugged terrain and maritime domain,” the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry added that procurement of VSHORAD, as a robust and quickly deployable system, will strengthen India’s air defence capabilities.
