Russia has launched a wave of missile and self-exploding drone attacks on Ukraine, officials from Kyiv told Associated Press on Thursday.

The attacks have resulted in the killing of one person in Kyiv and damaging critical infrastructure in the Black Sea region of Odesa, Reuters reported quoting officials.

Crowds of people took cover in the capital’s metro stations during a nationwide air alert before Russia unleashed the latest in a series of air attacks on the power grid since October that have caused sweeping outages during winter, Reuters reported.

Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesman for the air force, told the news agency that six Tu-95 fighter jets had taken off from Murmansk in northern Russia’s Arctic area and fired long-range missiles.

According to the administrator of Kyiv city, 15 cruise missiles were shot down, the international news agency Associated Press reported.

On the east bank of the river that separates the city, in the Dniprovskyi neighbourhood of Kiev, the mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said, the explosions were heard.

The attacks followed Wednesday’s announcement by Germany and the United States that they would send upgraded battle tanks to Ukraine.
