As Times Higher Education (THE) announces the World University Rankings 2024, Oxford University has secured rank 1 in the THE World University Rankings 2024, followed by Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in second and third places respectively. Harvard University has secured rank 4 and Cambridge University has been placed at the fifth position.

“The University of Oxford tops the ranking for the eighth year in a row, but others in the top five have seen shifts in their ranks. Stanford University moves up to second place, pushing Harvard University down to fourth,” the official website read. MIT has climbed up two places to third this year. Cambridge University slipped to fifth place, after being in joint third place last year.

As Oxford University once again claimed the coveted top spot, solidifying its reputation as a world-class institution, it is closely followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which maintain their strong positions in second and third place, respectively.

Harvard University, one of the most prestigious institutions in the world, holds the fourth rank, with Cambridge University not far behind in fifth place. The list continues with Princeton University at sixth, California Institute of Technology at seventh, and Imperial College London at eighth. Rounding off the top ten are the University of California, Berkeley at ninth and Yale University at the tenth position. These rankings reaffirm the excellence and competitiveness of these renowned universities on the global stage.

“The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 include 1,904 universities across 108 countries and regions. This year’s ranking analysed more than 134 million citations across 16.5 million research publications and included survey responses from 68,402 scholars globally. Overall, we collected 411,789 datapoints from more than 2,673 institutions that submitted data,” the website added.

Pertinently, 91 Indian institutes have secured a place. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore secured the top spot among Indian universities. It has been placed between 201-250 rank overall.

IISc Bangalore is followed by Anna University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Mahatma Gandhi University, and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences. These universities have been ranked between 501-600. Meanwhile, several Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) continued its boycott of the rankings for the fourth consecutive year.

The US is the most-represented country overall, with 169 institutions, and also the most-represented in the top 200 with 56 institutions. India is now the fourth most-represented nation with 91 institutions, overtaking China which has 86 institutes being represented in the rankings.

According to a statement issued by the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University, the varsity has been placed in the 501-600 band by the international ranking agency for the second consecutive year, despite a substantial increase in the number of the participating institutions.

“The press statement issued by Times Higher Education (THE) said that JMI secured maximum scores in research quality, teaching quality, international outlook and industry in the ranking. THE’s World University Rankings 2024 are the most comprehensive, rigorous and balanced global ranking,” the JMI statement read.
