Shopian attack: Body handed over to family, last rites held

Shopian: Funeral prayers of a former Sarpanch, who was shot dead by militants in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday night, were held on Sunday morning.

According to an official, the body of the victim, identified as Ajaz Ahmad Sheikh, was handed over to his family this morning and subsequently the last rites were held. He was fired upon by militants, the official said.

Soon after the attack, Sheikh was rushed to a nearby healthcare facility, where he succumbed to his injuries.

In south Kashmir’s Anantnag, a tourist couple was also injured after militants fired upon them. The duo was soon shifted to hospital where they are said to be stable. They have been identified as Farha and Tabrez of Jaipur in Rajasthan.
