Srinagar: As counting of votes for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls is underway, the current vote count in In Baramulla constituency, indicates Abdul Rashid Sheikh, running as an Independent candidate, leading with 140,073 votes.

He holds a lead of 61,619 votes over his closest competitor, Omar Abdullah of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, who trails with 78,454 votes.

Sajad Gani Lone of the Jammu & Kashmir People Conference is further behind in third place with 55,906 votes, trailing by 84,167 votes. Mir Mohammad Fayaz from the Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party is behind with 8,372 votes, trailing by 131,701 votes.

In Srinagar constituency, as of 11:30am, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, representing the JKNC, is leading with 126,585 votes. He maintains a lead of 71,677 votes over his nearest rival, Waheed Ur Rehman Para of the JKPDP, who has secured 54,908 votes.

Mohammad Ashraf Mir from the JKAP is trailing behind in third place with 25,678 votes, lagging by 100,907 votes.

This election marks the first for Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory, following its reorganization from a state in 2019 when its special status was revoked and it was divided into two Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.

These General Elections are also the first major polls since the dissolution of the elected Assembly, the revocation of the province’s special status by the BJP-led Union government, and the imposition of prolonged Internet shutdowns in the Valley.

According to the Election Commission, the region saw the highest voter turnout in the last 35 years. The Union Territory voted in the first, second, fourth, fifth, and sixth phases of the Lok Sabha elections, held on April 19, April 26, May 13, May 20, and May 25, respectively, with one of its five constituencies voting in each phase.

The vote-counting process for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections began today at 8:00 am. This year, polling for 543 constituencies commenced on April 19 and concluded on June 1, taking place over seven phases.

The 44-day voting period was the second longest in history, following the first parliamentary elections held in 1951-52. From the announcement of the polls by the Election Commission on March 16 to the counting of votes on June 4, the entire electoral process spanned 82 days.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar noted that 96.8 crore eligible voters participated in these elections to shape India’s political future.

The polling body administered the elections with the help of 1.5 crore polling officials across 10.5 lakh polling stations. The world’s largest democracy is set to reveal its electoral outcome today, with results expected by the afternoon.
