Malawi’s Vice President, nine others killed in plane crash

The aircraft went missing after failing to land at Mzuzu International Airport.

Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima has died in a plane crash along with nine other passengers, President Lazarus Chakwera announced on Tuesday.

The aircraft went missing after failing to land at Mzuzu International Airport, located approximately 380 km (240 miles) north of the capital, Lilongwe. The plane’s wreckage has been found, Chakwera confirmed on Tuesday.

“The search and rescue operation I ordered for the missing plane carrying our vice president and nine others has concluded. The plane has been located. It is with great sorrow that I must report this tragic event,” Chakwera stated.

The Malawian president revealed that the aircraft was discovered “completely destroyed” in Chikangawa Forest, noting that “words cannot describe how heartbreaking this is.”
