New Delhi: On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar informed an all-party meeting that India has pledged assistance to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who arrived on Monday evening, and has given her time to determine her next steps, PTI reported quoting sources.
In a briefing with political leaders at Parliament House, Jaishankar stated that India is coordinating with the Bangladesh army to ensure the safety of over 10,000 Indian students in Bangladesh, the report said quoting sources further.
“Updated an all-party meeting in Parliament today about the ongoing developments in Bangladesh. Grateful for the unanimous support and understanding received,” Jaishankar shared on X following the meeting.
Congress leader Karti Chidambaram mentioned that the government had briefed an all-party meeting about the situation in Bangladesh. “The Congress party fully supports the government on matters of national security and interest,” Chidambaram told PTI, despite not being present at the meeting.
Bangladesh has plunged into uncertainty following massive street protests over job quotas, which led Prime Minister Hasina to resign and flee.
The all-party meeting included Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, DMK leader T.R. Baalu, and NCP leader Supriya Sule, among others.
