New Delhi: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 has opened the floor for public and expert suggestions.
During the JPC’s first meeting on August 22, it was proposed to advertise in newspapers to invite broader input from stakeholders. In response, the JPC, led by Jagdambika Pal, has officially invited suggestions on the Bill.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat issued an advertisement on Friday, inviting individuals and organisations to submit their suggestions via post, fax, or email regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
The advertisement noted that the Bill, referred to the JPC for examination, has significant implications. The Committee, chaired by Jagdambika Pal, is seeking memoranda with views from the public, NGOs, experts, stakeholders, and institutions.
Suggestions can be submitted in English or Hindi within 15 days to the Joint Secretary at the Lok Sabha Secretariat, with details provided in the advertisement. The text of the Bill is available on the Lok Sabha website in both languages.
Submissions will be treated as confidential and become part of the Committee’s records. Those wishing to appear before the Committee should indicate their interest, though the final decision rests with the Committee.
The first JPC meeting featured a heated debate between BJP and opposition MPs over the Bill’s purpose. The second meeting is scheduled for Friday in the Parliament House Annexe, with representatives from various Muslim organisations invited to share their views.
