Srinagar: Minister for Education Sakina Itoo announced on Monday that the government will consult all concerned stakeholders to consider restoring the academic session in Kashmir, which was shifted from November-December to March in 2022.
The shift, initially implemented in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, aimed to align Kashmir’s academic calendar with the rest of India. However, the change in tradition did not sit well with everyone, sparking dissatisfaction among educators, parents, and students.
Critics argued that the new schedule disrupted the long-standing practice in the region, which was better suited to local climatic conditions.
“The harsh winter season makes it difficult for students to attend classes and prepare adequately under the March system,” said one educator.
Many believe the November-December schedule was more appropriate for the valley, as it avoided the coldest months.
Minister Itoo said that the government will take feedback from all quarters before making a final decision on whether to revert to the previous system or continue with the current March schedule.
