A passenger plane with 64 people on board crashed into the Potomac River in Washington, DC, after a mid-air collision with a US Army helicopter. So far, 18 bodies have been recovered from the freezing waters as search teams continue their efforts, BBC reported.

The PSA Airlines jet, operating as American Airlines 5432, was approaching Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport when it collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter from Fort Belvoir. The plane had departed from Wichita, Kansas, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members. The helicopter had three US soldiers on board.

Authorities, including the FAA and NTSB, are investigating. The airport has grounded all flights. Eyewitnesses described the plane’s unusual descent, with sparks trailing its underside before impact.

President Donald Trump said he was monitoring the situation and thanked first responders. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom expressed sorrow over the crash.
