Srinagar: PDP leader and MLA Waheed Para expressed concern over reports of three women being detained by police in Rajbagh for distributing the Holy Quran ahead of Ramzan on Sunday, calling it unjust. However, he later confirmed that the three women are safe and were briefly questioned ‘due to identity concerns’ while sharing the message of the Holy Quran.
Earlier, Para had urged Srinagar to ensure that these women are not unnecessarily brought into courts or police stations. “Quran promotes justice and a crime-free society,” he said.
A Kashmir-based activist Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat had also condemned the detention labelling it a serious violation of international law and the United Nations Charter, which safeguard religious freedom. Muzaffar asserted that the Holy Quran advocates justice and a crime-free society, making the detention of these women for their peaceful religious activities an affront to these principles.
Muzaffar had warned that such actions by the Indian government in Kashmir could escalate tensions and undermine regional peace efforts.
