The Amritsar Rural Police have arrested an Indian Army personnel and his accomplice for allegedly engaging in espionage activities connected to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

The arrested accused have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, also known as Gopy Foji, a resident of Dhariwal in Amritsar currently serving in the Sikh Regiment in Jammu, and his associate Sahil Masih, alias Shali, also from Dhariwal.

According to Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, initial investigations suggest Gurpreet was directly in contact with ISI agents and is suspected of passing on sensitive military information through pen drives. The key ISI handler involved has been named as Rana Javed.

Police recovered two mobile phones from the accused, which reportedly contained virtual numbers used to communicate with ISI operatives. The DGP noted that investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the espionage network and identify other individuals involved.

Amritsar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police Maninder Singh revealed that Gurpreet joined the Army in 2016 and misused his position to collect, store, and transmit classified information using digital storage devices.

He added that the espionage ring was allegedly facilitated by Arjan, a Dubai-based drug smuggler originally from Dhariwal, who introduced Gurpreet to ISI handlers five months ago. Since then, Gurpreet is believed to have regularly gathered and delivered sensitive information at pre-arranged drop points.

In return, Gurpreet reportedly received money through a complex network of transactions involving bank accounts of friends, relatives, and foreign contacts to avoid suspicion. Police apprehended Gurpreet and Sahil while they were preparing for another exchange of classified material.

Further investigation is underway to expose the full scope of the espionage-terror network and track down both domestic and overseas collaborators.

A case has been registered at the Lopoke police station under Sections 3, 5, and 9 of the Official Secrets Act, along with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
