At UN, US accuses China of aiding Russia in Ukraine war; Beijing denies

Tensions flared at a United Nations Security Council meeting as the United States and China exchanged sharp accusations over Beijing’s alleged involvement in supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Acting U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea accused China of covertly aiding Russia, urging Beijing to “stop fueling Russia’s aggression.” She cited evidence of Chinese-made parts found in drones, weapons, and vehicles used by Russian forces, claiming Beijing’s assurances about export controls on dual-use goods were undermined by facts on the ground.

China strongly denied the allegations. Deputy UN Ambassador Geng Shuang responded that China was not involved in the conflict, had not supplied lethal weapons, and maintains strict oversight on the export of dual-use items, including drones.

“China didn’t start the war, isn’t a party to it, and urges the U.S. to stop deflecting blame and stoking confrontation,” Geng said. He called on Washington to play a more constructive role in promoting dialogue and a ceasefire.

The U.S. has long accused Chinese companies of helping Moscow sidestep Western sanctions by supplying goods with potential military applications. American officials have warned of secondary sanctions on entities linked to Russia’s defence industry. Since February 2022, the U.S. has committed \$175 billion in aid to Ukraine.

China, positioning itself as a mediator, has criticised sanctions, arguing they disrupt global supply chains and disproportionately affect developing countries. Chinese officials maintain that isolating Russia will not bring peace.

Russia also dismissed the claims, stating its military hardware is domestically produced. Russian representatives accused Western nations of politicising the UN to pressure countries that reject sanctions, calling such tactics illegitimate under international law.
