New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to publicly refute former US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the debate on Operation Sindoor, Gandhi said Trump has claimed responsibility for the ceasefire at least 29 times and questioned why the prime minister had not contradicted him.
“Trump has said 29 times that he is responsible for the ceasefire. If he’s lying, let the PM say that he is lying,” Gandhi said as reported by Times of India. “The prime minister should say ‘Donald Trump is a liar’.”
The remark came as Gandhi accused the government of lacking transparency in its dealings on foreign and national security matters, especially in relation to cross-border incidents and diplomacy.
While the BJP benches objected to Gandhi’s remarks, demanding they be expunged from the record, he stood by his statement and reiterated that the country deserves clarity from its leadership on such claims made by foreign leaders.
The government has yet to issue a formal response to Gandhi’s demand.
