Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said he had received a call from Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi to discuss the situation in Kishtwar following Thursday’s massive cloudburst.
“I briefed him about the situation in Kishtwar and the steps being taken by the administration. My government and the people hit by this tragic cloudburst are grateful for his support and all the assistance provided by the Union Government,” Omar posted on X. The CM is expected to visit the affected area this afternoon.
At least 65 bodies have been recovered and several people are still missing, minister Javed Dar told reporters in Baramulla. The exact number of missing persons is unclear, he said, adding that rescue teams have been working at the site since Thursday night. Officials said the death toll stood at 52 on Thursday, including two CISF personnel, but has risen overnight. At least 112 people have been injured and over a hundred remain unaccounted for.
The disaster struck between noon and 1 pm at Chositi, the last motorable point on the route to the Machail Mata temple, where many devotees had gathered for the annual yatra. The pilgrimage, which began on July 25 and was due to end on September 5, has been suspended.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said he had briefed Home Minister Amit Shah on the ongoing rescue and relief operations. Shah assured all possible assistance. The LG expressed grief, extended condolences, and directed civil administration, police, army, NDRF, and SDRF teams to intensify efforts.
Heavy machinery has been deployed, additional teams rushed, and the Air Force placed on alert for evacuations. Rescue operations continue to locate the missing and treat the injured.
