New Delhi: Opposition MPs protested vehemently by tearing and throwing copies of three bills at Home Minister Amit Shah during Wednesday’s Lok Sabha session, TOI reported.
The bills, aimed at enabling the removal of the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers facing corruption or serious criminal charges and detained for 30 consecutive days, were tabled by Shah.
The bills include the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025. Shah also proposed sending them to a joint parliamentary committee for review.
The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025, specifically seeks to amend Section 54 of the 2019 Act to legally allow removal of the Chief Minister or ministers in case of arrest or detention on serious criminal charges.
Opposition members vocally opposed the bills amid loud sloganeering, forcing Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to adjourn the House till 3 pm.
AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi condemned the bills, saying, “These amendments violate the separation of powers and undermine the people’s right to elect their government. Executive agencies are being empowered to act as judge and executioner on flimsy allegations, paving the way for a police state. The Chief Minister and Ministers will no longer be accountable to the people.”
