Srinagar: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Monday called for a collective effort by political parties, social groups and civil society to secure the release of Kashmiri prisoners lodged in jails within and outside Jammu and Kashmir.

In a post on social media, the Mirwaiz said highlighting the plight of thousands of detainees was the “moral responsibility of all Kashmiris.”

He warned that “playing politics even on this humanitarian issue will be a shame,” urging all stakeholders to jointly push for their relief and release.

His appeal came hours after PDP president Mehbooba Mufti led a protest in Srinagar demanding the shifting of Kashmiri prisoners back to local jails.

Mehbooba had also urged National Conference leader Omar Abdullah to take the lead in pressing the government of India on the issue.

Kashmiri political leaders and families of detainees have repeatedly voiced concern over prolonged detentions, ailing prisoners and hardships faced by their dependents.
