Srinagar: Continuous heavy rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday forced the closure of several major highways and triggered flooding in parts of the Valley, prompting authorities to issue flood alerts and police to activate emergency helplines in multiple districts.

In Budgam, floodwaters entered homes in low-lying villages, forcing families to shift to safer places. District Police Budgam set up round-the-clock emergency helplines: 01951-255207, 8082567612, 6006751939. Senior officers and local SHOs have also shared their direct numbers for immediate assistance.

Police activate helplines in Shopian, Kulgam & Anantnag

To ensure rapid response, police across south and central Kashmir districts have also issued emergency contact lists:

Shopian Police: PCR numbers 01933-261891, 9596768831, 9596768856, with direct lines to SSP, ASP, DySPs and SHOs across all subdivisions, including Zainapora, Keller, Heerpora, and Imamsahib.

Kulgam Police: PCR number 01931-260486 / 9469950887 or dial 112. Dedicated helplines have been established for SSP, Addl SP, SDPOs of Qazigund, DH Pora, Mirbazar, Yaripora and all police stations in the district.

Anantnag Police: Issued a public advisory on flash floods and landslide risk, along with a list of emergency contacts, including PCR Anantnag 7780885759 and SHOs of Pahalgam, Kokernag, Bijbehara, Mattan, Dooru, Achabal and others.

Advisory to the public: Authorities have issued dos and don’ts to minimise risks.

Do’s: Stay indoors unless necessary, keep emergency kits ready, monitor river levels, keep phones charged, and rely on official updates.

Don’ts: Avoid riverbanks, streams, hilly roads, weak walls or temporary sheds; do not spread rumours; do not attempt to cross bridges or streams during heavy rain.

The Meteorological Department has already sounded a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across J&K, warning of flash floods, landslides and waterlogging. Restoration and relief efforts are continuing, but officials cautioned that timelines for reopening roads depend on improvement in weather conditions.

The Srinagar-Jammu highway, Mughal Road, Srinagar–Sonamarg–Ganderbal (SSG) Road and Sinthan Road have been closed due to landslides, mudslides and shooting stones at multiple locations. Traffic officials in their 11:30 am bulletin confirmed that restoration work is underway but advised commuters not to undertake any journey until the weather improves and clearance is completed.

“People are requested not to pay heed to rumours and rely only on official advisories for road status,” traffic authorities said, adding that updates are available through the J&K Traffic Police Twitter handle, Facebook page and Traffic Control Units (TCUs).

The incessant downpour has swollen rivers and streams, with the Jhelum crossing the flood-alert mark at Sangam and several tributaries flowing above the danger level.
