Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir is on high alert as an active Western Disturbance is set to impact the region, bringing widespread heavy rain and snowfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the period between October 5 and October 7, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall in many areas of the Jammu division and south Kashmir.

Higher reaches such as Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, and the Pir Panjal Range are expected to experience moderate to heavy snowfall. Authorities have warned of potential landslides and shooting stones in vulnerable locations.

In response to the severe weather forecast, the Directorate of School Education Jammu (DSEJ) has ordered the closure of all government and private schools across the Jammu Division for two days, on October 6 and 7. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of students and staff amid the anticipated inclement weather.

The administration has also suspended the Vaishno Devi Yatra for the same period, advising pilgrims to defer their visits due to the adverse weather conditions. Travelers are urged to stay updated on road conditions, as the Srinagar-Jammu highway and other mountain passes may face disruptions due to snow accumulation and landslides. The public is advised to follow guidelines issued by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and remain vigilant during this period.
