New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday described the powerful car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort that killed at least eight people as a “conspiracy,” pledging that those behind the attack would be brought to justice.
Police have not yet confirmed the cause of Monday’s blast, which occurred close to the historic Red Fort — a landmark where the prime minister delivers his Independence Day address each year. The explosion, which left 19 others injured, is being treated as one of the most serious security incidents in the capital since the April 22 Pahalgam attack in Kashmir that killed 26 civilians.
Speaking during an official visit to Bhutan, Modi said, “I assure everyone that the agencies will get to the bottom of the entire conspiracy. All those involved will be brought to justice.”
The blast, which tore through several vehicles near the Red Fort metro station, sent shockwaves through the city. Forensic teams and crime scene investigators examined the charred remains of vehicles early Tuesday as authorities tightened security in and around the capital.
Hours before the explosion, police had arrested several suspects and seized explosive materials and assault rifles. Officials said the accused were linked to Pakistan-based terror groups Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, both banned in India and associated with previous attacks in Kashmir.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, addressing a conference in New Delhi, said investigative agencies were carrying out a “swift and thorough inquiry” and promised that the findings would soon be made public.
