India has emerged as the world’s third most competitive country in artificial intelligence, according to Stanford University’s Global AI Vibrancy Tool released on Sunday.
The latest rankings underscore India’s growing influence in the global AI race, driven by its expanding technology ecosystem and a strong talent base. A Visual Capitalist chart based on Stanford’s data shows the United States leading with a vibrancy score of 78.6, followed by China at 36.95. India ranks third with a score of 21.59.
India’s position places it ahead of several advanced economies, including South Korea, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, Canada, Germany and France. The AI Vibrancy Tool evaluates countries by combining multiple indicators into a single score to assess the strength and competitiveness of their AI ecosystems.
These indicators cover research and development, availability of talent, investment and economic impact, infrastructure, public sentiment, and policy and governance. The tool highlights where AI innovation is accelerating and the extent of government support for the sector.
The data also points to a strong correlation between income levels and AI competitiveness. While high-income countries dominate the top ranks, upper-middle-income countries such as China and Brazil are steadily narrowing the gap.
India stands out among lower-middle-income countries as the only nation to secure such a high ranking, highlighting its distinctive position in the global AI landscape. Across individual metrics, different countries lead in different areas.
The United States tops categories such as research and development, responsible AI, economic impact, policy and governance, and infrastructure. China shows strength in talent, economy and infrastructure, while India ranks among the top three in talent, reflecting its vast pool of skilled technology and engineering professionals.
