Aid curbs could cripple Gaza relief operations, warns UN

Hunger crisis in warn-torn Gaza

The United Nations has criticised a newly introduced registration system for humanitarian organisations, warning that it could severely disrupt the already limited flow of aid into the Gaza Strip.

In a strong statement, the Humanitarian Country Team of the Occupied Palestinian Territory cautioned that the new rules could lead to the deregistration and shutdown of dozens of non-governmental organisations within weeks, undermining relief efforts in the war-hit enclave.

“These organisations represent only a small share of the humanitarian response in Gaza and are already insufficient to meet basic needs. If they are forced out, the entire aid operation risks collapse,” the statement said.

The UN noted that around USD 1 billion worth of assistance is delivered annually to Gaza. However, it said large consignments of food, medicines, hygiene kits and shelter material are currently stranded outside the territory, unable to reach civilians.

The agency warned that the forced exit of NGOs would lead to the immediate closure of nearly one-third of Gaza’s health facilities, depriving tens of thousands of patients of essential care.

Calling for urgent action, the UN urged Israel to allow unhindered humanitarian access, warning that further delays would have devastating consequences for civilians.
