Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday renewed her attack on Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of exerting control over the Election Commission of India, PTI reported.
Addressing Trinamool Congress booth-level agents at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, Banerjee alleged that the Commission was acting at the behest of the BJP and manipulating the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
“I have never seen such an autocratic home minister,” she said, alleging large-scale attempts to delete the names of eligible voters from the rolls.
She claimed that central officers appointed as micro-observers lacked familiarity with local languages and were unfit to conduct verification during the revision process. Banerjee further alleged that efforts were underway to remove as many as 1.5 crore voters from the state’s electoral lists.
The chief minister cited figures from her Bhawanipore and Chowringhee constituencies, claiming tens of thousands of names had already been deleted.
Reiterating an earlier warning, Banerjee said she would stage an indefinite protest if even one eligible voter was excluded. She urged party workers to conduct door-to-door verification and assist voters in filing applications for inclusion where names had been removed.
Calling on grassroots workers to remain vigilant, she asserted that the Trinamool Congress would overcome attempts to influence the electoral process and return to power in the state.
