Srinagar: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday inaugurated the redeveloped Amira Kadal bridge in Srinagar, a project under the Srinagar Smart City initiative, officials said.
The historic bridge has been converted into a pedestrian-only structure aimed at improving public movement and enhancing the heritage appeal of the Jhelum riverfront. One of Srinagar’s oldest bridges, Amira Kadal now features upgraded pathways.
Sinha was accompanied at the inauguration by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg, Inspector General of Police Kashmir Zone, the Srinagar deputy commissioner, the chief executive officer of Srinagar Smart City Limited, Lal Chowk MLA Ahsan Pardeshi and other senior officials.
Officials said the bridge will function as a major public landmark, linking Lal Chowk with adjoining markets while also serving as a cultural and recreational space for pedestrians. The redevelopment includes smart lighting, seating areas and improved walkways as part of the city’s broader riverfront development plan.
Speaking after the inauguration, Sinha said the revamped Amira Kadal symbolises the administration’s effort to integrate heritage with modern civic infrastructure. He said the project reflects the Smart City vision of reviving Srinagar’s traditional urban character while strengthening public spaces and connectivity.
He added that the initiative focusses on combining the city’s historic identity with contemporary amenities to create vibrant cultural spaces. Sinha said completion of Smart City projects would help restore the historic link between Srinagar and Shehr-e-Khaas.
