JK takes up suspension of Kashmiri students at Mewar University

Students protest not for privilege, but for their right to a recognised education and a secure future.

Thirty-three students were suspended after protesting against lack of mandatory approvals for a nursing course, prompting J&K to seek intervention to safeguard their academic future

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government has taken up with the Rajasthan government the issue of suspension of 33 Kashmiri students studying at Mewar University in Chittorgarh, officials said on Thursday.

Advisor to the J&K Chief Minister, Nasir Sogami, said efforts are underway to resolve the matter through coordination with the counterpart government in Rajasthan.

The students were suspended after protesting against the university’s failure to secure mandatory approvals from the Rajasthan Nursing Council (RNC) and the Indian Nursing Council (INC) for its B.Sc. Nursing programme, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association said.

Association National Convenor Nasir Khuehami said the absence of statutory recognition has placed the academic future of more than 50 Kashmiri students enrolled in the course at risk, raising uncertainty over the validity of their degrees, professional registration and employment prospects.

He alleged that the university had repeatedly assured students that approvals would be obtained, including a written commitment by the registrar last year, but no progress has been made. Students, he said, resorted to peaceful protest after prolonged uncertainty, following which 33 of them were suspended.

Calling the move punitive, the association said students should not bear the consequences of administrative lapses and urged authorities to either secure the required approvals immediately or transfer the affected students to recognised institutions without academic loss.

The association has appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma to intervene and ensure that the students’ education and careers are protected.
