Srinagar: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has expressed serious concern over what he described as a steady decline in social conduct and a growing culture of verbal hostility in society, particularly on digital platforms.
Delivering a sermon at Masjid Abu Bakr (RA) in Zoonimar during the holy month of Ramzan, the Mirwaiz said the essence of fasting extends far beyond abstaining from food and drink. He emphasised that Ramzan is a period of moral transformation, calling for purification of speech, discipline of thought, and refinement of behaviour.
“True fasting demands that we guard our tongues and cleanse our character,” he said, adding that speech filled with ridicule, mockery, and hurtful words reflects a deeper moral crisis that Ramzan urges believers to confront and correct.
Expressing sadness over the tone of public discourse, especially on social media, he observed that platforms meant for communication and constructive engagement are increasingly being misused for abuse and personal attacks. Differences of opinion, he stressed, must not lead to disrespect, humiliation, or dehumanisation.
Quoting the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) that a believer should either speak good or remain silent, the Mirwaiz reminded the congregation that abusive language stands in direct contradiction to Islamic teachings and the spirit of Ramzan.
He urged the community, particularly the youth, to uphold dignity, restraint, and compassion in their interactions, so that the blessed month becomes a means of moral reform, social harmony, and spiritual renewal.
