Several profiles identified and summoned as crackdown targets misinformation, says police

Srinagar: The police in the city on Monday said it has registered an FIR against persons and media outlets for allegedly circulating false and fabricated information with the intent to disturb public order.

In a statement, the police said it has taken “serious cognisance” of the deliberate spread of misleading content across electronic and social media platforms. The force alleged that certain news channels, media outlets and persons were attempting to push distorted narratives and unverified information to incite unrest and create disharmony.

An FIR — No. 01/2026 — has been registered at the Cyber Police Station Srinagar under relevant legal provisions, officials said. Several social media profiles have been identified, and the persons concerned have been summoned to the cyber cell for questioning.

Police said the investigation is underway, and strict legal action will be taken against anyone found involved. It also claimed that some prominent individuals were attempting to provoke activities that could disturb peace and public order, adding that such actions were under close watch.

Issuing a public advisory, the police warned that spreading fake news, inflammatory content or unverified information would invite stringent legal consequences. Citizens and media organisations were urged to verify facts from official and credible sources before sharing content that could affect communal harmony.

The force reiterated that it remains committed to maintaining law and order and will not allow any attempt to destabilise peace in the region.
