PDP chief offers condolences over Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s death, urges assistance for students from JK studying in Iran
New Delhi: Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday visited the Iranian Cultural Centre and the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in New Delhi to offer condolences to the people of Iran following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In a post on social media, Mufti said she paid tributes to Khamenei and expressed solidarity with the Iranian people during what she described as a difficult time.
She also raised the issue of Kashmiri students currently stranded in Iran during her interaction with the Iranian ambassador and sought assistance regarding their safety and return.
Mufti said the matter was brought to the embassy’s attention as families in Jammu and Kashmir remain concerned about students pursuing higher education in Iran.
As per reports, more than 1,000 Indian students—many of them from Jammu and Kashmir—are currently in Iran, with families urging the Government of India to ensure their safety or arrange evacuation if the situation worsens.
Authorities have already relocated some Indian students from Tehran to relatively safer areas such as Qom after military strikes and rising tensions in the region.
The issue has also been raised by political leaders and student organisations in Jammu and Kashmir, who have appealed to New Delhi to closely monitor the situation and take steps to protect students studying in Iranian universities.
Meanwhile, the Government of India has said it is closely monitoring developments in West Asia and taking necessary measures to safeguard Indian nationals in the region.
