Seeks revocation of FIRs, suspension orders against students over course recognition issue

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has written to Home Minister Amit Shah seeking his intervention for revocation of FIRs and suspension orders against over 50 Kashmiri students of Mewar University in Rajasthan, who are facing academic uncertainty over an alleged lack of statutory approvals for their nursing programme.

In its representation to the Home Minister, the Association said the students, currently enrolled in the 5th semester of B.Sc Nursing at the Chittorgarh-based university, recently came to know that the programme allegedly does not have mandatory approvals from the Indian Nursing Council (INC) and the Rajasthan Nursing Council (RNC).

JKSA National Convenor Nasir Khuehami said the students, who were admitted under a J&K scholarship scheme funded by the Indian Army, are now staring at an uncertain future with their degree programme scheduled to be completed within the next four months.

“The students are facing deep distress and anxiety over the validity of their qualifications, their eligibility for professional registration, and their future employment prospects. If the programme indeed lacks the required approvals, the degree obtained by the students may not be recognized for professional practice,” Khuehami said.

He said when the students approached the university administration seeking clarification about the approval status and requested official documentation, the authorities allegedly failed to provide satisfactory responses.

The students subsequently staged a peaceful protest within the campus demanding transparency and assurance regarding the recognition status of their course. However, the university administration allegedly lodged an FIR against 17 Kashmiri students who participated in the protest, while 33 others were suspended.

“The students have only demanded that either the university secure the necessary statutory approvals without further delay or facilitate their transfer to a duly recognized institution where they can continue their education without jeopardizing their academic and professional prospects,” Khuehami said.

JKSA National President Umar Jamal urged the Home Minister to direct the Rajasthan government to take immediate steps to address the crisis and restore confidence among the affected students and their families.

The Association has demanded strict action against the university, including blacklisting if serious irregularities are found in the conduct and recognition of the programme. It has also sought revocation of the FIR against the students, withdrawal of suspension orders, and an independent inquiry into allegations of assault and harassment by university authorities.

Jamal requested the Home Minister to facilitate the migration of the affected students to another recognized institution to protect their academic future and careers.
