Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi brushed aside comments by US President Donald Trump about a possible meeting with Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, saying such matters must be considered in a practical and realistic context.
Araghchi said security agencies had recommended limiting Khamenei’s public appearances due to security concerns. He stressed that communication with the Supreme Leader remains ongoing and that his directives are conveyed and implemented whenever necessary.
Describing Mojtaba Khamenei as the current leader of the Islamic Republic, Araghchi said he plays a central role in shaping the country’s affairs and exercises full authority over state matters.
He also said the loyalty and obedience previously shown to the late Supreme Leader continue unchanged under Khamenei’s leadership.
The remarks came days after President Trump said he would be willing to meet Khamenei if it helped secure an agreement with Iran. Speaking at the White House, Trump said he would approach such a meeting with respect and would be open to talks if they advanced diplomatic efforts.
Trump also revealed that his administration had considered deploying US special operations forces to seize Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. However, he said the plan was abandoned because it would have required an extended operation in a conflict zone and carried significant risks.
