Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met US Vice President JD Vance on Saturday on the sidelines of the US-Iran technical-level talks underway in Burgenstock, Switzerland, as part of follow-up efforts to implement the memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached during negotiations hosted in Islamabad earlier this year.
Sharif, who has been involved in facilitating dialogue between Washington and Tehran alongside Qatari officials, held discussions with Vance as technical teams from the United States and Iran began work on the details of the interim agreement aimed at advancing negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme and broader regional stability.
According to reports, the Switzerland talks are intended to translate the framework agreed under the Islamabad MoU into concrete commitments over a 60-day period. The negotiations have taken on added significance amid renewed tensions in the Middle East, including concerns over the Strait of Hormuz and the fragile ceasefire involving Iran-backed Hezbollah.
Sharif’s participation underscores Pakistan’s continuing role as a facilitator in the diplomatic process, with Islamabad expressing hope that sustained engagement between the parties will contribute to durable peace and stability in the region.
