FIFA World Cup: Handwritten note from Iran calls for peace after 0-0 stalemate with Belgium

TThe handwritten message was found in dressing room.

Iran’s national football team left a handwritten message in their dressing room at Los Angeles Stadium after their 0-0 World Cup draw against Belgium on Sunday.

The note emphasised themes of peace, respect, and dignity, thanking the city and Iranian supporters for their encouragement throughout the team’s first two matches.

The message stated that Iran arrived in Los Angeles with pride, competed honourably, and was departing with dignity. It also highlighted the nation’s long history, describing the enduring spirit of Iran from ancient Persia to the present day, while expressing hopes for peace, friendship, and mutual respect among countries.

The gesture came amid ongoing concerns raised by the Iranian Football Federation regarding the team’s travel arrangements. Earlier in the week, the federation announced plans to file a complaint with FIFA over issues surrounding the squad’s journey for the Belgium match.

Iran has faced logistical difficulties during the tournament, operating from a base camp in Tijuana, Mexico, and traveling under strict restrictions. The team arrived in the United States on Saturday evening, played their match on Sunday afternoon, and was scheduled to leave the country later that same night.

Head coach Amir Ghalenoei criticised the challenging circumstances surrounding the team’s participation, citing visa issues in both the United States and Mexico, as well as limited preparation time before the tournament. He previously described Iran as the “most oppressed team” at the World Cup.

Los Angeles, home to the largest Iranian community in the United States, hosted Iran’s first two group-stage matches.

After drawing with both New Zealand and Belgium, Iran will face Egypt at Seattle Stadium on June 26. A victory would secure their place in the knockout rounds.
