Modi lauds revival of Kashmir’s traditional ‘Vagu’ mat in Mann Ki Baat

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised the revival of Kashmir’s traditional ‘Vagu’ mat, highlighting the efforts of local artisans in preserving the centuries-old craft and promoting sustainable, eco-friendly products.

Addressing the nation during the 136th episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, Modi said the resurgence of the handcrafted mat reflected how talent, determination and community effort could help revive India’s rich cultural heritage.

The Prime Minister explained that Vagu is made from reeds and paddy straw collected from Kashmir’s marshy areas. After the reeds are harvested, dried and sorted, artisans weave the mats by hand, a process that takes around four days for two people to complete a single mat.

Describing Vagu as a unique and environmentally friendly product, Modi said it keeps homes cool during summer and warm in winter. He noted that while the mats were once found in almost every Kashmiri household, their use had declined significantly over the years.

Highlighting the role of local artisans, Modi praised Srinagar-based craftsman Ghulam Hussain and his daughter Tanzila for taking the initiative to revive the traditional craft. He said Hussain, despite coming from a humble background and facing several challenges, remained committed to preserving Vagu, inspiring many others to join the effort. He also acknowledged the support extended by the local government in promoting the craft.

Modi said the renewed interest in Vagu has helped the traditional product reach markets beyond Jammu and Kashmir, creating fresh opportunities for artisans while preserving an important part of the region’s cultural identity.

Calling the revival an example of the government’s ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign, Modi urged people across the country to support indigenous products and consider bringing Kashmir’s traditional Vagu mat into their homes, saying such initiatives strengthen local craftsmanship while promoting sustainable living.
