Free power promise unfulfilled, says NC MP Rahullah

Warns ‘arrogance’ will sink party as he raps tariff hike

Srinagar: National Conference MP Aga Syed Rahullah has accused his own party-led government in Jammu and Kashmir of failing to deliver on its pre-poll promise of providing 200 units of free electricity, and warned that “arrogance” within the leadership would harm the party.

Addressing reporters, MP Rahullah said the NC had assured voters of free power ahead of the last assembly elections but the pledge remained unrealised even after two years of the government assuming office.

“We told people we will give 200 units for free. For two years, we have not been able to do so,” he said.

Recalling Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s past remarks on electricity meters, the MP said the CM had spoken of throwing meters into the river but had not followed through.

MP Rahullah said he understood the necessity of installing meters but questioned the government’s decision to raise power tariffs by nearly seven per cent instead of fulfilling the promised free units.

“Instead of giving 200 units free, the government is increasing tariffs,” he said.

The MP also criticised certain party functionaries, describing them as “sycophants” for questioning his loyalty whenever he raised issues against the government.

“When I raise my voice, some sycophants ask why I have not resigned from the party. I am here because of the people, and I seek accountability,” he said.

Asserting that his political standing rested on public trust rather than any individual leader, MP Rahullah accused the NC leadership of being afflicted with “arrogance” and cautioned that such an approach would prove detrimental to the party’s future.

“The arrogance has drowned NC. It will drown them,” he said.
