Cockroach Janta Party calls off Sept. 5 Delhi march after government assurances

The Cockroach Janta Party on Tuesday withdrew its planned Sept. 5 protest march in Delhi after the government gave assurances over its demands and following proceedings in the Supreme Court, the Hindustan Times reports.

CJP representative Saurav Das told the Supreme Court that the organisation was withdrawing the proposed march, which had been planned from India Gate to Delhi Police Headquarters. The decision came after the Centre committed to honour assurances made to the group, including compensation for families of NEET aspirants who died by suicide.

The development follows the Supreme Court’s refusal on Monday to issue urgent restrictions against the proposed demonstration. A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said there was no compelling reason at that stage to presume the protest would lead to a law-and-order problem and directed the petitioner to approach the government.

The CJP had announced the march after accusing the Centre of failing to honour commitments made on July. 25 following earlier student protests. The organisation had said the demonstration would be peaceful and would involve families of NEET victims, students and young citizens.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to consider related matters concerning the protests on Sept. 10.
