Two oil tankers reportedly struck in Strait of Hormuz
Two oil supertankers were struck by projectiles of unknown origin in the Strait of Hormuz, Greek maritime security firm Marisks told Bloomberg, raising fresh concerns over the safety of commercial shipping through the vital energy route.
Marisks said the two ships were hit in the strategic waterway but it did not say when it happened. The shipping companies the vessels belonged to could not be reached immediately and names of ships were not released in the report. Reports came as tensions over the waterway, which transports considerable oil traffic, flared.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had said one Saudi-owned tanker had been struck in the strait, as ships there have not heeded its call and used unsafe passageways. The Guards could not be reached immediately to say whether they had information to connect the hit tanker to either reported strike.
The latest incidents could further increase concerns about disruptions to global energy supplies as tensions between Iran and the United States remain high.
