Iranian cyberattacks on US telecommunications, energy and other critical infrastructure have failed in recent weeks, according to a report by NBC News citing two people familiar with the incidents.
The attempts have not caused any major disruption to the systems targeted, the sources said.
The activity comes at a time when tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply risen, with the two countries exchanging military strikes and Iran targeting US assets in the Middle East. The return of conflict has also raised alarm about Iranian cyberattacks against US infrastructure.
US officials have warned that Iran-linked cyber actors pose threats to critical infrastructure. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said Iranian-affiliated actors had targeted programmable logic controllers used across US critical infrastructure like industrial systems.
The most recent reported attempts underscore fears that the conflict could leap from conventional military action into cyberspace. US authorities have urged organisations operating critical infrastructure to strengthen cyber defenses and look for suspicious activity on networks.
