UN chief Guterres to attend BRICS Summit in New Delhi
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will participate in the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Sept. 12-13, adding senior UN representation to India’s BRICS chairship.
India, currently holding the rotational presidency of BRICS, assumed the chairmanship of the bloc on January 1 and would be hosting the meet at Bharat Mandapam, with BRICS member countries, partner countries and invitees to external reach expected to gather.
Confirmation of Guterres attending, which was given via his spokesman, Stphane Dujarric at a UN briefing on Tuesday.
India’s BRICS chairship is being conducted under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”. The country has held the chair previously in 2012, 2016 and 2021. BRICS is also marking its 20th anniversary this year.
The summit comes as BRICS seeks to strengthen cooperation among member and partner countries across political, economic and people-to-people issues.
