Five students were injured when a portion of the ceiling of a concrete classroom at a government school in Mugalolli Lambani Tanda in Karnataka’s Bagalkot district collapsed during classes on Wednesday, the Times of India reported.
The students from Classes 5 and 6 were first taken to a local hospital for first aid and then shifted to the Bagalkot District Hospital. All five were said to be out of danger.
The injured students were Prem, Rakesh, Mahesh, Sunita and Satish, The Times of India reported. The incident happened when students were in the classroom attending lessons.
Block Education Officer M.S. Badadani said the school building was constructed in 2006 and had structural damage due to the recent rains.
Parents have expressed concern about the state of the school building and have called for repairs and better security measures. Education officials visited the school and hospital after the incident.
Deputy Director of School Education R. S. Seetharamu said officials will investigate the circumstances of the collapse. “I will visit the school and collect details about the incident. There were clear instructions that children must be taught only in safe premises.
Action will be taken against those who allowed classes to be conducted in a dilapidated room,” he told The New Indian Express. Authorities have said the damaged part of the building needs urgent repairs.
