India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in an international effort to shape the development of next-generation 6G telecommunications networks, the US Department of Commerce said in a social media post,
The initiative, according to the department, is aimed at promoting secure next-generation networks, enhancing technological competitiveness and fostering innovation in 6G.
The announcement was made following a meeting between Indian Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick at the G20 Innovation Ministerial on the sidelines.
The two officials discussed the future of 6G and wider cooperation on emerging technologies, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence and data centres, Indian broadcaster Akashvani reported.
The US Commerce Department said the participating countries were seeking to ensure that next-generation networks reflect shared security interests while supporting innovation and competitiveness.
India’s delegation to the G20 Innovation Ministers meeting, led by Prasada, was held on Sept. 1-2 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The meeting was hosted by the US White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the Commerce Department.
India has also been addressing its 6G ambitions in parallel with the Bharat 6G Mission, which seeks to enhance the country’s participation in the development of future technologies and standards for telecommunications networks.
India’s latest initiative gives India a wider platform for cooperation on the development and security of 6G technology.
