Russian regional authorities reported on Thursday that eight people were hurt in an overnight attack by sea drones on the Black Sea resort city of Sochi, which partially damaged beach infrastructure.
The Krasnodar regional authorities reported the casualties on Telegram, but gave no details about the severity of the injuries. The attack took place late Wednesday, authorities said.
Reuters reviewed video footage that showed gunfire and an explosion near a Sochi embankment, with screaming heard in the background. The video could not independently verify who launched the drones.
The attack comes amid a rising wave of drone strikes on Russian infrastructure deep behind the front lines in Ukraine, including energy, logistics and military targets. Sea drone attacks occur less frequently than air strikes.
Ukrainian forces also struck infrastructure in the nearby Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, where President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a naval base, an oil terminal and military port facilities were hit.
Sochi, a major Russian tourist destination, hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics. Russian President Vladimir Putin also has an official residence in the city.
Diplomatic efforts to end the war have continued, as have long-range drone attacks by Russia and Ukraine.
