Reports say at least three Iranian soldiers were killed and others wounded in clashes with militants during a raid on a suspected hideout in Saravan in Iran’s southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province on Saturday.
Multiple reports said fighting broke out as Iranian security forces moved against militants at the hideout in Saravan, near the Pakistan border. Several militants are also said to have died in the operation.
There was no immediate independent confirmation of the number of casualties and the affiliations and identities of the militants were not immediately clear.
A long-running insurgency in Sistan and Baluchestan has seen armed groups, including Sunni militant organisations, attack Iranian security and military personnel. In recent years Saravan, near the Pakistani border, has seen repeated clashes and attacks.
Iranian authorities have previously reported raids on militant hideouts in the province in which suspected fighters were killed. The area remains one of Iran’s most volatile regions, with security operations regularly reported along the border.
