Pakistan hit with dual World Test Championship sanctions

Pakistan have been hit with a double sanction after maintaining a slow over-rate during their third and final World Test Championship Test against England in Birmingham, with the players fined 50% of their match fees and the team docked 11 points, ICC stated.

The International Cricket Council said Pakistan were 11 overs short of the required rate after time allowances were taken into account during the Edgbaston Test, which England won by eight wickets on Saturday.

The penalties were imposed under the ICC’s minimum over-rate regulations. Players are fined 5% of their match fee for each over their side falls short, up to a maximum of 50%, while teams lose one World Test Championship point for every over short.

The latest deduction leaves Pakistan with just five points from nine matches in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle and a points percentage of 4.63%, according to Reuters.

The sanctions compound a difficult Test campaign for Pakistan, who were swept 3-0 by England after losing the final match at Edgbaston. England chased down a target of 130 to complete the series victory.

Pakistan had already been docked eight WTC points for a slow over-rate during their first Test against Bangladesh in May.

The latest penalty leaves Pakistan at the bottom of the WTC standings and further reduces their chances of challenging for a place in the 2027 final.
